Phytochemical screening and effects of aqueous extracts of Cymbopogon citratus(DC) Staptand Origanum vulgare (LINN) on the biochemical and haematological profileof Wistar strain albino rats

Medicinal plants have played a major role in the field of medicine as alternative therapy to orthodox drugs. This present study aimed evaluate acute toxicity Cymbopogon citratus and Origanum vulgare aqueous extracts on albino rats.The qualitative phytochemical analyses was done using standard procedures. The LD50 determined modified Lorke’s method, while biochemical haematological analysis were by automated methods. Results from reveals presence Alkaloids, Flavanoids, Phenols tannins, Steroids sterols, Carbohydrates, Saponins, Protein amino acid Anthraquininein two extracts. Furthermore, electrolytes(urea creatinine) within normal range rats control orally administered (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg 400 mg/kg). Total protein, alkaline phosphate, total bilirubin, conjugate alanine aminotransferase, albumin Aspartate aminotransferase also both groups treated with 100mg/kg 200mg/kg 400mg/kg. White blood celland platelet followed same trend falling Packed cell volume, Haemoglobin values higher than across test groups. Aqueous crude ofC. Citratusand O. vulgarecontain primary secondary metabolites thus potential medicinal properties anti-inflammatory, anti- malaria, viral, bacteria anti-fungal agents. Orally C. (100mg/kg, 400mg/kg)have no toxicological/pathological effect wistar strain such, indigenous safe for consumption.
